Spartans Finish in Eighth Place at NCAA Bryan Regional - Michigan State Athletics

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State's men's golf team made a run to pull within five strokes of the final qualifying spot in the final spot, but fell short and finished in eighth place among 13 teams at the NCAA Bryan Regional at the Traditions Clubs in Texas.

The Spartans shot an 8-over par 296 and finished the three-day, 54-hole regional at 20-over par 884.

The top five teams from each of six regionals advance to the national championships, to be played from May 27 to June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Final Results

Arizona shot a 13-under par 851 and finished atop the 13-team field and led from start to finish. Other qualifying teams include second Pepperdine at 8-under par 856, while Texas A&M finished third at 4-under par 860, Georgia was fourth at 1-under par 863 and Kansas finished in fifth place at 3-over par 867.

SMU placed sixth at 14-over par 878, with Tennessee seventh at 16-over par 880, followed by the Spartans.

Sophomore August Meekhof was the top finisher for the Spartans, tying for 17th place at even-par 216. He closed out his regional with an even-par 72 on Wednesday, posting 11 pars, two birdies and an eagle.

Senior James Piot tied for 29th place at 4-over par 220, finishing the tournament with a 3-over par 75 on Wednesday afternoon. After playing the front nine at even par, Piot posted two birdies and two double bogies on the back nine.

Senior Troy Taylor finished in a tie for 47th place at 9-over par 225, carding a 4-over par 76 in Wednesday's final round. He had 13 birdies and a birdie in his final round.

Freshman Ashton McCulloch shot a 7-over par 79 and finished in 57th place at 13-over par 229.

Junior Bradley Smithson posted his best round of the week on Wednesday with a 1-over par 73 and finished in a tie for 60th place at 15-over par 231.
