When we fall in love with a show, we want to visit places that it’s based on. What about Fraser’s Ridge in Outlander? Is it a real place?

We know that Outlander has a lot of real history thrown in. There are various locations that are real, or at least based on real places. We just have to look at Culloden Moore, Prestonpans, and the Palace of Versailles. What about some of the places Claire and Jamie call home?

Lallybroch isn’t a real place, but what about the second home for them? Fraser’s Ridge becomes their home in North Carolina, a place for them to build a family and support those who need a place to live in the colonies. Is it somewhere real you can visit?

Outlander’s Fraser’s Ridge is not a real place

Diana Gabaldon has confirmed that Fraser’s Ridge is not a real place. That being said, it is based on true places. There were many settlements like this during the 18th century as people from the UK moved to the colonies for a new life. We see others in the series, including Brownsville.

Town and Country tells us that Gabaldon shares that if Fraser’s Ridge was real, it would be located “up near Boone and Blowing Rock.” This helps fans get an idea of the place in their minds. It’s a chance to offer a place for people to visit if they want to get a sense of the beauty and the weather described throughout the books.

As for filming, this still takes place in Scotland. There are sections of Scotland that look very much like North Carolina. It allows for production to remain in the country where it all started, which is also a cheaper place for the show to film compared to most of the United States.

Many of the locations have remained a secret as locations are often on private land. This allows the people renting out their locations for filming get to keep their privacy from fans who want to visit locations.
