Rangers place catcher Jonah Heim on IL - The Dallas Morning News

SAN DIEGO — The Rangers will be without another All-Star for at least two weeks.

The club placed catcher Jonah Heim on the IL on Friday with a left wrist injury that he suffered on a swing against Houston’s Framber Valdez on Wednesday. He joins fellow All-Star shortstop Corey Seager there. Seager is dealing with a sprained thumb.

Heim will attempt to rest and rehab the injured wrist tendon, but surgery is very much an option. If he can play through the pain, it’s an off-season option. If he can’t, it will end his year. He will give it 2-3 weeks of rest before deciding upon the next step.

Heim has been a workhorse behind the plate. He started Friday third in the majors in innings caught at 682.

It means the Rangers will divide the catching for the time being between Mitch Garver, who has started nine games behind the plate in eight weeks since returning from a knee injury, and Sam Huff, who has not started a game behind the plate in the majors this year. The Rangers don’t currently have another catcher on the 40-man roster.

The Rangers replaced Heim with the only player on the 40-man roster that has any MLB experience: outfielder Bubba Thompson. The other position players: Jonathan Ornelas, Dustin Harris and Luisangel Acuña.

The Rangers are also activated right-hander Josh Sborz from the IL on Friday. Sborz, out for the last two weeks with biceps tendinitis, pitched a scoreless inning with a strikeout on a rehab appearance for Triple-A Round Rock at El Paso on Wednesday. Sborz had been the Rangers most effective middle-inning reliever for most of the season.

Sborz replaced Owen White, who pitched two innings of relief to end the 13-5 win over Houston on Wednesday and did not travel to the West Coast.

The Rangers are at the 13-pitcher limit on the roster and, thus, were unable to replace Heim with yet another relief arm.
