Sound of Freedom holds onto 3rd place at box office as Barbie and Oppenheimer debut - Washington Examiner

Sound of Freedom has continued its success at the box office in its third weekend of release, despite steep competition from two major films released on Friday.

The small budget film, detailing the true story of how former Homeland Security agent Tim Ballard quit his DHS job and risked his life to journey into the jungles of Colombia in an effort to save children from sex slavery, held strong at the box office over the weekend, earning approximately $20 million over the three-day period. The film's performance this weekend is only slightly less than last weekend when it earned roughly $27 million, according to a report.

“SOUND of FREEDOM is continuing its unbelievable ride.” said Brandon Purdie, Head of Theatrical Distribution at Angel Studios said in a statement provided to the Washington Examiner. “Word continues to spread, and crowds are continuing to show up, which is how this film ended up doing more business in its third weekend than its first. As we begin to look toward the international box office, Angel Studios intends to continue to push here at home. We want every American to see this landmark film.”

In total, Sound of Freedom has made just under $125 million at the box office since its July 4 release, according to the studio.

The film's continued box office success comes amid the release of highly promoted films, Barbie and Oppenheimer. The former PG-13 film, based on the popular children's toyline, grossed a record-breaking $155 million at the box office over the weekend, while the latter, an R rated biographic on J. Robert Oppenheimer, grossed roughly $80 million.

Former President Donald Trump hosted a screening of Sound of Freedom on Wednesday night at his golf course in New Jersey, with producer Eduardo Verastegui, lead actor Jim Caviezel, and former Homeland Security agent Tim Ballard and his wife in attendance. After watching the film, Trump made a new campaign promise to use Title 42, a policy enacted under the Trump administration which allowed Border Patrol to expel immigrants without granting them an asylum hearing, to end the child trafficking crises "by returning all trafficked children to their families in their home countries and without delay."

"Under my leadership we did more than any other administration in history to combat human trafficking and to end modern-day slavery," Trump said, citing the Frederick Douglass Trafficking Victims Prevention and Protection Re-authorization Act, the Abolish Human Trafficking Act, and other executive orders around the topic.

Trump has encouraged his supporters to watch Sound of Freedom.
