Three Females Take 1st Place Crown at Princeton Open as Women’s & Men’s Wrestling Begin Season - Presbyterian College

PRINCETON, N.J. – There was no shortage of headlines or noteworthy performances for the Presbyterian College women's and men's wrestling teams on Sunday afternoon, beginning the fourth season in program history at the multi-team Princeton Open with a trio of top prizes on the women's side and another top-three placement on the men's competition. Altogether, the Blue Hose kicked off the fall campaign with seven athletes making the top five of their respective weight classes (two of them in their debut event), highlighted by an individual championship from Samantha Miller, Sierra Marie Miller, and Paige Wehrmeister.

NOTABLES
- Picking up right where she left off to open her junior campaign with a flawless path to the 1st place trophy in the 101-lb. class, Samantha Miller utterly dominated her three opponents for a combined margin of 17-0, coming away with a first-period pin in all three rounds to unanimously take the first of three titles for a PC women's squad that starts off the season ranked 8th in the nation by the NWCA.

- Not one to be outdone by her fellow top-prize performer, sophomore Sierra Marie Miller mirrored her duplicate surname with a perfect route to the championship in the 130-lb. group. Taking four first-period pins in a row for a total score of 14-4, Miller became the second-ever Princeton Open women's champion in the footsteps of the Blue Hose's other Miller, claiming a 2-0 triumph over Lock Haven's Lily Sherer to seize the 1st-place accolade.

- Capping off Presbyterian's three-headed monster of championship victories, Wehrmeister immediately made her presence felt in her blue and white debut with four straight technical falls – three of them by a 10-0 drubbing and another by an equally impressive 12-2 difference – to cruise to the 136-lb. crown. Shutting out North Carolina's Marisol Nugent to finish the perfect day, Wehrmeister's title polished a combined record of 11-0 for PC's three championship placers, sending quite the impactful statement to start off the 2022-23 year.

- Ainslie Lane and Cassandra Lopez ended the long trip north right in the mix of top finishes themselves, placing 3rd and 4th respectively in the 116 and 109-lb. classes. Beside a second-match slip-up, Lane's other three wins all came by the same margin of 12-2, including the 3rd-place clincher over Calli Gilchrist. Meanwhile, Lopez would also amass three personal W's on her way to 4th place, taking three of her first four duels in convincing fashion.

- Alongside the women's team's imposing performance to begin the season on a high note, the Blue Hose men's unit posted some impressive figures as well, the highest of which came from redshirt senior Jacob Brasseur with a 3rd-place standing in the 133-lb. group. The Lexington, S.C. native bounced back from a semifinal defeat to knock off Rider's D'amani Almodovar in a tight 4-3 decision to place inside the top three.

- Second-year competitor Malcolm Wiley embarked on a huge turnaround on Sunday after falling in his opening bout across the 197-lb. class, going on to snatch a W in his final four matches over representatives from four different schools to claim a 5th-place finish. The sophomore's lone loss came from George Mason's Jon List, a result that Wiley eventually gained redemption for by defeating List in a rematch for the 5th-place nod.

- Another first-timer who turned heads during his freshman unveiling over the weekend, collegiate rookie Ryan Luna posted a 3-2 record to land in 6th place over a very difficult 133-lb. weight class (the same core that saw Brasseur find a 3rd-place standing). The Gilroy, Calif. product captured three wins in a row after a narrow miss in his first match, setting the stage for a bright future amidst a Presbyterian team with loads of young talent.

- The ninth PC wrestler to end the busy afternoon inside the top 10 of his respective class, sophomore David Bertrand came in 8th place in the 184-lb. group with a 2-2 record. The second-year Georgia native posted back-to-back consolation round victories by a combined 17-6 clip to put a bow on Presbyterian's productive tournament.

UP NEXT
The Blue Hose will stay busy during the month of November as they look to build off the success of their first event, as both PC teams will compete twice next weekend in separate venues. Headed for Marietta, Ga. this Friday and Saturday, the women's team will visit Life University for a head-to-head duel on the 11th and another multi-team open the following day hosted by the same school.

A similar two-day outlook awaits the Presbyterian men's team, but on Saturday and Sunday of next weekend instead. The Blue Hose will now look forward to a neutral site contest against the Michigan State Spartans in Charleston, S.C. six days from now, going from a head-to-head against the Big Ten representative to then taking part in The Citadel Open the next afternoon in the same city.
