A bomb threat investigation is underway at Bowie State University, and school officials advised anyone on campus Monday morning to shelter in place. Howard University, which also is a historically Black university, was the subject of what D.C. police called “a possible bomb threat.”

The threat at the Bowie, Maryland, university was received early Monday, with someone claiming that “explosives had been placed in [an] academic building,” administrators said in a statement.

The Prince George’s County Police Department and Maryland State Police are investigating the threat, school officials said. A number of police cars could be seen on campus as law enforcement went building by building to check for potential hazards. Nothing was immediately found.

“All threats of this nature are taken seriously and fully investigated,” the university's statement said.

The campus is closed Monday, and classes are being held online. Offices are operating virtually.

Initial information about an emergency on campus was posted online at about 7:30 a.m.

At least two other HBCUs in the United States faced bomb threats Monday.

Southern University and A&M College, in Baton Rouge, received a bomb threat early Monday and was on lockdown, administrators said online. Albany State University also received a bomb threat. Students and employees were told not to report to campus.
